YNAB alternative for couples: free, and both of you open it
YNAB shares beautifully with a partner. Then one of you keeps the budget and the other receives reports about it. The fix is an app the second person opens anyway, for the shop and the dentist as much as the money.
15 October 2026
You started the 34-day trial together. By day ten one of you was planning every dollar on a Sunday night, and the other one was asking what the plan was for.
That is usually when the search for a YNAB alternative for couples starts. Not because YNAB is bad. Because it asks two people to practise a method, and in most houses only one of them signed up for it.
Everything below about YNAB comes from ynab.com, read on 15 October 2026. Nothing is borrowed from another app’s comparison page, and most of the pages ranking for this search are exactly that.
Why couples go looking for a YNAB alternative
Read the reviews and the reasons come in two kinds. One is the price: YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year once the trial runs out, and there is no free plan. That is real money for an app whose whole purpose is to find you money.
The other reason is quieter and far more common. YNAB’s own home page frames the method as planning before spending and asking “What’s it for?” of every dollar. That is a habit, and a habit has to be kept by somebody. In a couple it is nearly always one somebody.
So the budget becomes one person’s project. The other one adds a transaction when reminded, opens the app when something has gone wrong, and gradually stops opening it at all.
What the second person needs is a reason to open the app on a day that is not about money.
What a YNAB alternative for couples should fix
Here is the same month in Chirpy. The rent goes into Money once with This repeats ticked, and from then on it is on the household calendar on the 1st, beside the dentist on Tuesday and the car going in on Thursday. Nobody assigns anything. It is just there, in the week you both look at anyway.
Saturday’s shop comes to $84.20. Whoever paid types it in at the till with Groceries as the category, and the grocery bar moves on the other phone straight away. On Sunday night either of you can ask Chirpy “how much have we got left for eating out this month?” and it answers from your own budget.
That is the shift. The budget stops being a separate ritual one of you performs and becomes part of the place you already go to see what the week holds. Chirpy Basic is free for the whole household, up to six people, with no card.
What YNAB does for a couple, from its own pages
Credit first, because a comparison that gets the rival wrong is not worth reading. YNAB’s pricing page says you can share it with partners, families and close-knit groups of up to six people on one subscription. Its Manage Money Together page says each partner works from a separate login, both can update and edit the same plan, and it comes at no additional cost.
The trial is 34 days with no credit card when you sign up directly. College students get 365 days with proof of enrolment. The home page lists goals, an overview of all your money, and photos and memos on transactions, on iPhone, Android, the web and Apple Watch.
One thing YNAB does better than us: if both of you genuinely want to plan every dollar before the month starts, nothing teaches that method as thoroughly. For the much more common couple, where one of you wants a plan and the other wants to know whether there is money for Friday, Chirpy answers the second question without asking either of you to learn the first.
Free against free, top tier against top tier
| Plan | Price | Who is covered |
|---|---|---|
| YNAB free | None. 34-day trial, no card | Ends when the trial does |
| Chirpy Basic | Free, no time limit | Up to six people, no card |
| YNAB | $14.99/mo or $109/yr | Up to six people, separate logins |
| Chirpy Pro | $12.99/mo or $89/yr, not on sale yet | The whole household |
YNAB’s figures are from ynab.com/pricing on 15 October 2026, ours from our own pricing the same day. Free against free there is no contest, because YNAB has no free plan. Top tier against top tier, Chirpy Pro is $20 a year less, and the difference buys the calendar, the shopping list and the meal plan the money is spent on, with the assistant doing the typing in each of them.
Who does the typing
A shared budget lives or dies on whether the spending gets recorded. YNAB’s answer is a method strong enough that you want to record it. Ours is to make recording so small that nobody notices doing it.
Repeating bills are entered once, ever. A spend is an amount and a category from whichever phone paid. A bank’s CSV export can fill in a month in one go when someone falls behind. Our guide to the bill due date calendar shows how to put every bill and both paydays on the same month in one evening.
And when Pro opens
Chirpy Pro is where the assistant does the typing everywhere. Photograph the receipt and it is a spend, with the shop, the amount and the date filled in. Say “dentist Tuesday half four” and it is on the calendar. Pro is not on sale yet, so it is not part of this swap. Basic is the whole argument here.
Settle the split before you switch
Changing apps is a good moment to agree the thing YNAB never asks: who pays what. If you earn different amounts, our guide on how to split bills unequal incomes works through what each method leaves each of you with at the end of the month.
Then deal with the bills YNAB users know best, the yearly ones. Planning for them is a habit worth keeping in the move. Our piece on sinking funds for annual bills shows how to set them up so the car insurance is planned for months before it lands on the card.
How to move from YNAB in one evening
- List last month’s bills from YNAB. Name, amount, due date. That list is the only history worth bringing.
- Put each repeating bill into Chirpy’s Money once and tick This repeats. They appear on the household calendar straight away.
- Set three category budgets, no more. Groceries, eating out and whatever you argue about. YNAB users tend to arrive with forty categories. Two people will not keep forty.
- Invite your partner from Settings. They see the same month on their own phone as soon as they join.
- Give it two weeks before judging. The first fortnight feels like admin. The third week is when the month starts answering questions on its own.
Which one is right for you two
Move to Chirpy if one of you has quietly stopped looking, if the bills surprise you because they live away from the week, or if $109 a year is buying a method only half the house uses. If you are weighing the other paid apps too, we priced the best budgeting app for couples on what the second person costs. And if the free app you are leaving is a different one, see our honeydue alternative comparison.
