Chirpy vs Cozi: which family organiser fits your house
Cozi has been the family calendar since 2005. We do something it does not. Here is the difference in plain terms.
Cozi has been the family calendar since 2005. Millions of households run on it, it works, and for a lot of families it is the right answer and the end of the search.
We are newer and much smaller. So rather than a feature grid where we happen to win every row, here is the actual difference, which is that the two apps are organised around different things.
The actual difference
Cozi is a scheduling app. Its centre of gravity is this week: who is where, what is for dinner, what needs buying. Everything in it points at the next seven days, and after twenty years of refinement it does that very well.
Chirpy is built around a different question. What is going to bite us?
A calendar handles things that happen. Chirpy handles things that expire.
Those sound similar and behave nothing alike. An appointment happens and is over. A renewal sits quietly for two years and then becomes a serious problem over the course of about six weeks, and the only defence is a warning that arrives long before the date.
So in Chirpy a document and its expiry date are one thing, not a file somewhere and a calendar entry you remembered to make. File a passport, get warnings at 90, 30 and 7 days, automatically, for everyone in the house. Here is why 90 days is the number that matters.

Cozi Gold is cheaper than Chirpy Plus. If all you want is a shared calendar without ads, that $20 difference is real and Cozi is a sensible buy.
Worth correcting one thing you will read in other comparisons: people keep describing Cozi as the app with no AI. That stopped being true. Cozi Max imports events from email and generates meal plans. Our free tier carries no ads, which theirs does, and our AI starts lower down the range, but the “they have no AI” line is out of date and we are not going to repeat it.
Where Cozi is stronger
- Calendar maturity. Two decades means every awkward recurring-event case has been hit and fixed already.
- Meal planning. The recipe library and its link into the shopping list have had far more attention than ours.
- Scale. More people have used it, so more people can help you when something confuses you.
Where Chirpy is stronger
- Documents with dates. A vault that holds the file and the deadline together, with automatic warnings. Cozi has no equivalent.
- Renewals nobody set. The warnings exist because you filed the document, not because you remembered to make a reminder.
- Money in the same place. Spending, budgets and who owes whom, next to everything else.
- More than one country. Multiple currencies and overlapping tax years are a normal case here rather than an edge one.
- No ads at any tier, including free.
So which one
Coziif your hard problem is four people’s schedules colliding and dinner. It is cheaper at the middle tier and more mature at that job.
Chirpy if your hard problem has paperwork in it. Immigration status, renewals, more than one country, a stack of dates nobody is formally in charge of. That is a different kind of stress and it is the one we built for.
Both are free to start and neither asks for a card, so the fastest way to decide is to put one real document into each and see which one you keep opening.
