Car insurance renewal reminder that both drivers get
The renewal email went to one inbox, the price rose, and it renewed itself. The email is a courtesy to one person. The date on the schedule is the deadline.

The renewal email went to one inbox, the price went up, and it renewed itself. Neither of you looked, because each of you thought the email was the other one’s.
A car insurance renewal reminder is supposed to stop exactly that, and most people think the insurer sent theirs. It did. It went to the policyholder, on the insurer’s timetable, at a point when comparing anything is hard.
So here is a reminder you own: early enough to shop around, aimed at everyone who drives, and tied to the policy page rather than to a memory of one.
Find the date on the policy page, not the email
Your policy has one date that matters, and it is printed on the document you were sent when you bought it.
- The policy schedule or declarations page. It lists the term, the cars, the drivers, the cover and the end date. Save the PDF.
- Your insurer’s app or account. It shows the same dates and usually the renewal quote once it exists.
- The insurance card. Many show the effective and expiry dates in small print.
Write down the end date, the policy number and which car it covers. With two cars on two policies, the number matters more than it sounds.
The email is a courtesy to one person. The date on the schedule is the deadline.
Set a car insurance renewal reminder that reaches both drivers
Now put the date somewhere that will speak up. In Chirpy, open Car and add a record, category Insurance. Put what you paid under Cost, the vehicle and the policy number under Details, and the end date in the “Renews / due” box.
The date lands on the household calendar, and every member of the household is reminded: 30 days before, a week before, at eight the evening before and at nine on the morning. The person who drives the car hears, not only whoever bought the policy. Ask “when does the car insurance renew?” and the assistant reads your Car records and answers with the date. Chirpy Basic is free for the whole household, up to six people, no card.
Why the renewal is the moment to shop
Switching is cheapest at the end of a term. Ireland’s consumer regulator says plainly that the ideal time to switch is when you are renewing, and that switching mid-term usually brings a penalty fee (ccpc.ie, read 16 October 2026). It also says the insurer must send your renewal notice at least 20 working days before the policy ends. That is Irish law; elsewhere the period differs, so read your own notice.
The practical point travels. Quotes are comparable only if they cover the same things, so keep the old schedule open beside the new quote and check four lines: the cover, the deductible, the drivers and the cars. A cheaper price on thinner cover is a different product.
- Read the renewal quote against last year’s schedule. Did the cover or the deductible change?
- Get two or three quotes for identical cover.
- Ask your own insurer whether it will match or improve its offer, with the quotes in hand.
- Start the new policy the day the old one ends, never the day after.
One honest concession: a price-comparison site is quicker at the quotes than anything we do. Chirpy does not sell insurance. It is the thing that tells both of you the date arrives in six weeks, keeps the policy number beside the car, and holds last year’s cost so you can see the change.
Two cars, two policies, one list
One policy is easy to carry in your head. Two cars on different insurers and months, plus a teenager added in spring, is where one date slips quietly.
Give each car its own Insurance record in Car, beside its Registration and its services. Ask “which car’s insurance is next?” and the assistant tells you. The cost goes in too, so when you work out how much does my car cost a month, the insurance is in the total. If a big annual premium lands in one go, our sinking funds for annual bills guide spreads it across the year.
After you renew, roll it forward
The day the new schedule arrives is the only day anyone has it in their hand. Open the Insurance record, change the date to the new end date, update the cost and replace the policy number if it changed. The reminders reset for everyone.
Insurance is the paper half of car admin. The dated registration half is in car registration renewal reminder, and the mileage half is in car service reminder app. A glance at all three belongs in your household admin checklist monthly.
